YESS Selective Endoscopic Discectomy™ is the least invasive method of removing herniated disc causing pressure on a nerve. The procedure is done with the patient awake with conscious sedation and/or local anesthesia. The patient is placed on the belly and using fluoroscopy (special X-ray machine) a needle and then subsequently a guidewire is inserted into the target disk. Once in position, a dilator is placed over the guidewire into the disc space. Thence, a hollow working channel called a cannula, which is like a metal drinking straw, is in turn inserted over the dilator into the disc space. The dilator is removed, and an endoscope inserted to visualize minute details on a video monitor. Various tools are next utilized to remove the offending pathology. Once completed, the patient is transferred to the recovery room from where they are discharged within a few hours.
